I live in a life of curiosity in Brooklyn and churn out digital ideas at Undercurrent.

I’m in love with this Danish band I found on thesixtyone.com, (which you should check out now; it’s my new favorite place to discover music).

See and hear more of them at http://efterklang.net/

This video in particular is wonderful, wonderful - especially for a city girl with the woods in her heart.

(Zee Avi, Honey Bee, Bitter Heart and others…)

I was listening to Studio 360 on this sunny Saturday and happened to catch an interview with Zee Avi, a Malaysian singer/songwriter/ukuleleist.  She got her start through gathering an impressive YouTube following and, like many others these days, that’s actually a great testament to her appeal and actual talent.

After hearing the above series of songs I was instantly in love, downloaded her album immediately and have been listening all day. She reminds me of the classic and gone-too-soon folk singer Israel Kamakawiwo’ole. It’s rare to hear something that is simple, kind and utterly impressive.

She is also impossibly adorable:

I very much encourage you listen more on her siteyoutube, and buy the album ($8.00!) on itunes…completely worth it.

A New Adventure

Looking back on 2009, I realized with horror the stark absence of music. No matter what, music always had a place in my life in one way or another…lessons, lazy summers, the college radio station…but somehow the past year, (or couple years to be fair), I’ve become uncharacteristically estranged from even listening to…anything. So now I’ve added a new regimen to my life, the fruit of which will appear on Sundays right here.  For now I’m calling it the weekly mari.mix (hello middle school…alternate name suggestions are welcome) and this is volume one.

This week, perhaps because I recently said good-bye to a dearest Grandparent, the theme is all nostalgia. In fact, this is technically an “old” mix I’ve had floating around for a while and tweaked over time and so, in that way, it is kind of an old friend.  A weathered and warm friend with a slightly South Western accent, conjuring scenes of dust, whiskey, leather and fireplaces.

Download and Enjoy :)

Swedish artists/band jj sampling Lil’ Wayne. Just press play - awesome.

This comes from one of my favorite Swedish arts collectives/catalogues Sincerely Yours, which actually deserves a post of it’s own..but that shall be forthcoming. Until then, enjoy this breathy Scandinavian re-styling of our favorite Mr. Dwayne Carter.
